ELECTROSCOPE, PITH BALL

  • This pith-ball electroscope is used to detect the presence of a static electricity charge. It consists of two lightweight “pith” balls suspended from the strings and these are attracted to objects with a static electric charge. The pith balls can also be charged by touching them to an object with a static electric charge.
  • Students can appreciate the application of the pith-ball electroscope in detecting electric charges and for determining the polarity of an unknown charge.
  • Our device is mounted on a solid round base with an insulated stand.
  • Over the hook, at the end of the stand, two pith balls are suspended from an unspun silk thread.
  • The apparatus comes with 3 strings and six pith balls with a diameter of 8mm each.
