APPARATUS TO DEMONSTRATE FARADAY’S LAW
- Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction is a very important principle. Most of the electrical power in the world is generated by using this principle.
- Faraday discovered that when he moved a magnet near a wire a voltage was generated across it. This voltage was termed the induced e.m.f.
- Our apparatus provides a simple and an effective method of studying Faraday’s Law.
- It consists of a 100 turn coil with 4mm socket connections which slide on a long, 15mm diameter acrylic tube.
- The coil can easily slide up and down the acrylic tube and can also be locked in position.
- A small cylindrical magnet (supplied) can be dropped down the tube to generate a pulse of electricity as it passes through.
- An oscilloscope is used to monitor the resultant induced e.m.f and to measure its amplitude.
- At different speeds the amplitude varies and this provides the basis for a student investigation into the relationship between distance fallen by the magnet and the output amplitude.
- PC based oscilloscopes are particularly suited to this equipment.
