LINEAR EXPANSION APPARATUS

  • This is used to measure the coefficient of linear expansion of different metals.
  • The apparatus consists of a metal rod, enclosed in a well lagged, nickel-plated brass tube with three tubules for steam inlet, steam outlet and a thermometer.
  • The metal rod to be studied is supported in the steam jacket by detachable conical cups situated at each end of the tube.
  • The metal rod is heated by steam, passing through the brass tube.
  • The apparatus is carried on a heavy-gauge channel base, with an adjusting screw at one end.
  • At the opposite end is a micrometer screw reading to 0.01 mm, for measuring the expansion.
  • Dimensions of the metal rod: Length=500mm; Diameter=4.5mm.
  • The apparatus includes copper, brass & iron rods.
  • Thermometer is not included and can be bought separately.
