This is used for demonstrating that the force experienced by a current carrying conductor when placed in a magnetic field depends on the strength of the magnetic field and the magnitude of the current flowing through the conductor.
The apparatus comprises of metal wire arms formed into rectangular L-loops, with both the ends supported in an insulated beam balance.
The beam in turn is supported on top of a pair of metal pillars through conical bearings functioning as the fulcrum.
The balance beam has two screwed masses- one horizontal for adjusting equilibrium position of suspension arms, and the other vertical for adjuating sensitivity.
One arm has a rider sliding along a scale graduated 0-75mm, for adjusting the equilibrium with the current flowing.
The L-shaped bends at the end of the arms oscillate vertically in the magnetic field provided by permanent magnets that can slide to adjust the length of the arms in the magnetic field.
Each pillar is provided with a hole for accommodating 4mm plugs for electrical connections.
